Freddy Egovil-Aquino, of Peru, died Friday, Aug. 17 in the Hot Foot Canyon area of Greys River. The young man, estimated by rescue teams to be in his mid 20s, was drug behind his horse. The accident occurred while Egovil-Aquino was preforming his duties as a sheepherder in the area.
“This injuries sustained by the young man were consistent with being drug behind a horse,” said Lincoln County Sheriff Shane Johnson.
According to the Sheriff, the accident was reported by another sheepherder to Forest Service personnel. The Forest Service in turn notified the Sheriff’s office.
“The call reached the Sheriff’s office right around noon on Friday,” said Johnson.
Star Valley Search and Rescue as well as the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident. The body of Egovil-Aquino was located in rough terrain that was nearly impossible for rescuers to get to on foot. Eventually a helicopter was used to recover the body.
Wednesday morning, Sheriff’s Deputy Roy Warren, the deputy who has been working on the case, was talking with the Peruvian Consulate in an attempt to work out how to get Egovil-Aquino’s body back to Peru for burial.
