Thunder in Alpine makes some noise

Whether you walked in from the parking areas or rode in on the provided shuttle, you were greeted with the sight of hundreds of pristine cars and trucks and the smell of aviation fuel and cheeseburgers.

The weekend of Aug. 24 through Aug. 26 was a busy time for the Alpine community. The Top Of The Rockies Snowmobile Club and the Alpine Airpark sponsored the Thunder in Alpine car and airshow. The event took place at the Alpine airpark.

Saturday morning started with wandering around the 115 entries in the carshow area. Spectators were treated to vehicles from model A’s to present day Corvette’s.

Also represented were several trucks and motorcycles that made this show something for everyone.

As the day went on, attention was split between the beautiful vehicles and the wonderful displays put on by the aircraft.

The aircraft performing in the general aviation class including Aviat Huskies built in Afton, Cirrus, Cessna, Mooney, and even one home built model flown in from Salt Lake City.

The main performers included “Warbirds” such as the World War II fighters, the F2G Super Corsair and P-51 Mustang “Cripes A’ Mighty,” owned by airshow sponsor Bill Wiemann. There were several other military aircraft that performed as well.

The money raised by the event will be donated to the Alpine EMS, Alpine Fire Department, Friends of Alpine Library, Animal Humane Association of Star Valley and ARDA.

Saturdays attendance was estimated to be between 1,000 - 1,500 people and Sunday approximately 200 people participated.

“I would like to thank the Top Of The Rockies, the Airpark residents, and the performers for making it all happen,” said airshow sponsor Bill Wiemann.
Carshow Chairman Tiphany Gayhart also expressed her thanks.
