Council discusses importance of census

Next U.S. Census will take place in 2010.

Star Valley Ranch Town Councilman Kent Harker gave an informational presentation about the upcoming census at the regular council meeting Tuesday evening. Harker reported on a census conference he recently attended in Casper.
“I attended the 2010 U.S. Census kick-off in Casper on Aug. 29,” Harker said. “We were told about the methods that will be used in preparation for the census and what each city, town and county will be expected to provide to the census in the way of local information.”
According to Harker, census numbers are very important for a lot of reasons - primarily financial ones.
“The amount of federal funds the state could lose is between $100 and $500 per person not counted by the census,” Harker said. “Using the data from 2006, on average municipalities in Wyoming could lose $715 and counties could lose $656 in tax revenue annually for each person not counted by the census.”
In order to provide good information to the Census Bureau, will be looking to update local addresses so that the most current contact information is available to use for the upcoming census.
“You might think 2010 is a ways away,” said Harker. “But let me tell you that it is right around the corner.”
