Passing town ordinances without having an effective way to enforce them is a interesting problem. But, it is a problem that the Town of Star Valley Ranch will not have to deal with any more.
Yolanda Naverretta and Warren Webb were appointed as special municipal officers for the Town of Star Valley Ranch at the Tuesday, Sept. 11 council meeting. The two officers will have authority to issue citations for town ordinance violations. They cannot make arrests or enforce traffic violations.
“During the last legislative session Wyoming created legislation that allowed towns in the state to have special municipal officers if they chose to,” said Mayor Siddoway. “They are not police officers, but they can enforce municipal ordinances.”
According to Siddoway, one of the special municipal officers will be a “patrolling officer who is out looking for violations.” The other officer will not patrol.
“I think we will have fairly good coverage within the town with these two officers,” said Siddoway.
According to state law, the position of “special municipal officer” is a mayor appointed position. The officers also serve at the discretion of the mayor.
