State Supreme Court to hear cases in Star Valley Monday

Oral arguments are open to the public at begin at 9 a.m. Monday
The Wyoming State Supreme Court will be in Star Valley on Monday, Sept. 10, to hear oral arguments in two cases. The court will conviene in the high school auditorium at 9 a.m. The public is welcome to attend.
“The Wyoming State Supreme Court goes out once or twice a year,” said Judy Pacheco, clerk of court. “The location is determined by invitation.”

According to Pacheco, the goal behind hearing oral arguments at different locations around the state is to get people more involved with the judiciary branch of government.

“A lot of people in this state never seen the supreme court in action,” said Pacheco. “The judiciary branch is possibly the least understood branch of government.”

Pacheco went on to explain that the Wyoming State Supreme Court “especially likes to come to schools” across the state to give students a chance to meet the Supreme Court Justices and ask questions.

“The justices really like to get out amongst the students in the state,” said Pacheco. “They field questions from the students and have the chance to talk about the justice process and what they do.”

Monday’s schedule will include oral arguments from two cases. The first oral argument will take place from 9-10 a.m. Each side will be given half an hour to present their points. A short break will follow. The second case will be heard immediately following the break. At approximately 11:15 a.m. the justices will break for lunch.

Students will have the chance to participate in a question and answer session with the Supreme Court Justices following the lunch break.
