The Llama rides through a bumpy weekend: Week 2 Recap
By Dahl E. Llama on Sep 10, 2007 in Sports
Well, the Jackson / Star Valley second half withstanding, the entire weekend was pretty tolerable. I do have a thought on the Braves’ 0-3 start however, and it has to do with the fans. I loved the support, but not the noise level. Get off your hands Star Valley, and let’s go through football fan 101.
- Get loud when your opponent has a 3rd down – It raises the anxiety level for their players and makes it harder for them to communicate with their coaches and each other. This also raises the energy level for our defensive players, who feed off home crowd energy.
- As a home crowd, I’ve always wished we could unite with a specific cheer when the team gets a first down. I’m going to keep working on this with appropriate authorities, but how about “That’s a Crimson and Gold (enter crowd) FIRST DOWN! This does two things, it galvanizes the crowd for a common mindset and it get darn obnoxious for the other team. When the team rolls up 20 first downs in a game, they are tired of hearing it.
- Either get on the bandwagon, or get off – There’s no room for fair weather fans as far as I’m concerned. You either understand this or you are offended by this. I don’t want to hear one more word about us going winless. If that’s the only item you can find to talk with me about, then just keep walking. Sorry to get a little preachy, but if someone doesn’t believe they affect the mindset of the players during the week and on game day by their attitude, then we seriously disagree.
Now, time to get to the recap portion of the article, and the Dahl E. Llama went 5-2 this week to bring my season total to 12-4 or (.750).
Some things that stand out to me? How about Lander hanging tough with favored Cody, 17-7. Is Cody not quite as good as we think? We’ll find out this weekend. Is Lander better than people think? Something to ponder. Also, Buffalo left little doubt about Wheatland’s resurgence, caging the ‘Dawgs 27-6.
Here’s the scores:
Buffalo defeats Wheatland: 27-6 (correct)
Cody defeats Lander: 17-7 (correct)
Worland defeats Lyman: 26-12 (correct)
Mtn. View defeats Rawlins: 22-0 (A Vick-sized misjudgment)
Glenrock defeats Douglas: 30-22 (Wrong)
Powell defeats Riverton: 30-14 (Correct)
I know there are a lot of top 5 lists out there, here’s the Dahl E. Llama’s 4A top 5 after Week 2
#1 Buffalo
#2 Jackson
#3 Powell
#4 Douglas
#5 Cody

So you will take a stab at Michael Vick but you won’t comment on the lack of preparation by the Braves and the truly dismal coaching.
However I do agree with you on the SV fans. Where has all of the school spirit gone?
Hopefully the Wrestling team and Brave Cadets can keep the pride in the valley because the football and basketball teams are in deep doo doo.

First off, I’m saying that picking Rawlins when they clearly haven’t warranted it was a Vick-esque lack in judgement, even the most ardent Falcons fan would have to agree there.
I’ll never take a shot at the coaches, I’ve never coached, so being an armchair playcaller can only go so far.
Next, I think Star Valley has great fans, some of the best, that is proven by how far they will travel to see their team, I just feel we could be far more effective as a crowd with the sheer number of fans we have.
Finally, Why the shot at the teams? especially the footballers who have six games left. I’ll eat some crow if I’m wrong, but the football team AND the basketball teams are going to surprise some people by the time they’re done this year.

Traveling a great distance to see a Wyoming HS team play is no indicator of how much one supports that team. If one intends to ever watch SV play, he would have to travel a minimum of 1 hour. That is the nature of HS sports in Wyoming where athletic critters outnumber the HS athletes. If anyone wants to watch a football game live and in person, SVHS is the only choice for most people in the area. If there were any viable alternatives, not many people would attend SVHS games. We all know that people are attending because they are alumni or they know somebody who is playing. It isn’t because of the skill level or excitement. If it’s exciting football you want, you have to go a Ute or BYU game, minimum 3 hour drive.
6 games left equals a 3-6 record at best. And after seeing the administrative decisions recently made in Jackson Hole HS, SV fans need to get prepared to be JHHS’s whipping boy in basketball and football for the next many years. How will you want your crow?
The only surprise will be how crummy their record will be.

So I can assume we’ll not be penciling you in as president of the booster club Gerv?
Wow, some strong opinions, but we like that, because it proves my point that people are fervent about sports.
You make a couple of valid points with distance and choice, but it doesn’t describe how Star Valley fills two sections at the Casper Events center during Wrestling. Certainly there is a choice with 14 hours of driving involved, heck they could even hit the Pacific Coast!
As for good football 3 hours away, isn’t the state of Utah a combined 1-5 right now?
(That one felt good)
We’ll keep up on this crow thing, and the whipping boy thing.

Llama if you have so much confidence in the SV football team, let’s see you include them in your next 4A Football Predictions! Quit backing away from controversy and pandering to the good ol’ boys that got SV into their current coaching mess (football AND basketball). There are great kids in SV, it’s a shame that the school administrators can’t get it right. Coaching is king on every level of sports.

Hey Mr. Llama just for the record, I for one appreciate your positive attitude and enthusiasm for our Star Valley Braves. You are awesome!
Little Gerv may be interested to know that our Varsity basketball players had a dandy time last summer “whipping” on the JHS basketball team in a friendly competition. We probably shouldn’t count these SV boys out just yet!
And finally JMoss I take exception to your comment about the lack of preparation by our Braves. Being a parent of one of the boys I know how much time these kids put in during the summer as well as the fall season!
Go Braves!

Here’s some food for thought on the debate -
The last time the Braves started a season 0-3, which they now find themselves after dropping games against Park City, Snake River and Jackson, was in the 1995 season (the ‘95-96 school year)
That team lost games to Evanston, Rock Springs and Bear Lake before breaking through with a win against, you guessed it, Cody, our next opponent.
That team then won seven of their next eight games including the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP against Lander, 32-14.
To quote Wyoming coach Joe Glenn, winning is the great deodorant to cure the stench that surrounds a program.
Good Luck to the Braves
