Braves put headlock on Evanston title

With 30 teams from several states in attendance at the Evanston Invitational, there were many squads vying for the title. By Saturday afternoon, Star Valley had won and won big.

The Braves rolled up 244.5 points en route to the team title, pulling away from second-place Weber who finished with 186.5. Green River wrestled tough as well, placing third with 181.5.  Rock Springs and Evanston rounded out the top five which finished well ahead of squads from all over Utah, Nevada and from the Wyoming state capitol.

Individually, 16 Star Valley wrestlers placed in the top six, including championship performances from Justin “Whitey” Gardner and Ricky Fairbanks at the 119 and 125 pound weight classes respectively.

Star Valley now heads home for a Thursday duel with Rock Springs to kick off the home schedule. Junior varsity matches will begin at 5 p.m., with varsity matches scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. under the spotlight.
