Town annexes small portion of land to adjust speed limits south of Alpine

There was a time when driving into Alpine from the south presented an interesting phenomenon. The posted speed limit in the northbound lane was 45 mph. The posted speed limit for the southbound lane, however, was 35 mph.
Confusion was the result.
In an effort to alleviate that confusion, the Town of Alpine made the decision to annex 7.5 acres which would give the town control on both sides of Highway 89. The ordinance to annex that acreage passed its third reading at the Feb. 5 meeting of the town council.
“It was a good exercise for us to be involved in,” Alpine Mayor Victoria DeCora said of the annexation process. “The result is that Alpine is a little bigger this week.”
A public hearing on the annexation was held Dec. 18, 2007.
