That’s a load of garbage: Landfill rates to be discussed September 17

An additional Star Valley meeting to discuss county landfill rates has been scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008 at the Thayne Town Hall. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

According to Mary Crosby, solid waste director for Lincoln County, the meeting held in Star Valley in July was well attended. The upcoming meeting in September will present the same information. Public comment on landfill rates will also be accepted at the September meeting.

Crosby explained that some residents expressed concern to the county over not being able to attend the landfill meeting in July. Others who did attend the meeting expressed a desire for their acquaintances and/or customers to hear the presented information.

The purpose of the community meetings, Crosby said, is for members of the public to present additional ideas for rate fees as well as comment on the proposed landfill rate system.

The proposed changes to the fee schedule include a $10 flat fee per residential vehicle. The proposed rate for commercial use of the Kemmerer landfill is $40 a ton. The proposed commercial rate for the Cokeville landfill is $44 a ton. The proposed commercial rate for the Thayne landfill is $50 a ton.

Commercial e-waste, defined by the county as computers and televisions, is $.10 a pound at the Kemmerer Landfill, $.11 a pound at the Cokeville landfill and $.12 a pound at the Thayne landfill.

There is no proposed charge for residential e-waste.

The commercial and residential fees for appliances would be $10 each.

Tire fees would be $2 a tire for passenger or pick-up tires with no rims and $4 a tire with rims. Semi truck or trailer tires would be charged $6. The fee for small tractor or farm equipment tires would be $20 a tire under the proposed fee schedule. And large tractor or earth mover equipment tires would cost $100 per tire to take to the landfill.

Dead animals such as livestock, elk or deer would cost $20 each to dump at the landfill. Crosby stressed the fact that these are merely “draft rates for discussion purposes.”
