Powder Puff game ends in a 6-6 tie

It’s been said that Americans hate ties. The crowd wasn’t exactly up in arms Thursday evening but they went home without a resolution after the annual Senior/Junior Powder Puff game ended at the conclusion of overtime
The game was physical but distinctively less so than last year’s affair which came complete with injuries in a senior win. This year, it looked as though the juniors would run the Class of 2008-09 off the field as they picked up yardage in chunks with their superior speed.
With Dani Scherbel at quarterback, the juniors utilized their ability to get to the outside in the first half, with speedster Audrey West blowing past everyone to give them the 6-0 lead. The two-point conversion was no good.
In an evening marred by an marginal referee staff, the seniors capitalized on several questionable calls, including one interception by West which certainly would have been returned for a touchdown.
The seniors showed their pride in the second half however, as Gabby Barnes and Madison Wilkes utilized the great blocking of Raini Wolfley to march down the field. With just 43 seconds left on the clock, the Wilkes found the end zone, knotting up the game at 6-6. A subsequent pentalty for the senior “victory lap” caused the two-point conversion to be no good.
After three downs of overtime, the juniors decided to utilize their advantage with soccer kickers as Becca Sangster lined up the field goal. The kick looked good, but careened off the cross bar as a miss.
The seniors also went three downs without much action, although a deftly called timeout on fourth and four by Coach Paul Woodie, forced an offsides penalty to move the ball to the two yard line. Despite an initial signal of touchdown, it was clear than the player’s flag belt was well behind the goal line.
Activities Director, Jamie Holyoak, called the game a 6-6 tie, the first such event for a Star Valley football team since the Jerry Hart era.
Friday’s homecoming events are lined up as follows:

Tailgate Party: 3 p.m.
