Chili Cook-off highlights Ice Extravaganza; aim to raise fund for polio vacccine

The Rotary Club of Star Valley will sponsor a chili cook-off in conjunction with the Ice Festival on Friday, Dec. 26. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Rotary Club is now soliciting entries from the community. The event will be held at the fair grounds exhibit booth and electricity will be available. Each entrant should plan on a minimum of two gallons of chili and a cooking container to keep their chili warm.
The entry fee is $10 per contestant. All entry fees will be returned in the form of cash prizes.
A door fee of $5 for adult $2.50 for child will provide chili bowls, a roll and drink. Each taster will have one vote for the best chili.
“All of the proceeds from food will assist in two of Rotary’s pet projects,” said Marta Heap of the Rotary Club. “Bring your appetite and help us provide funding for these important international and local programs.”
The two projects the Rotary Club of Star Valley is raising money for are the Polio Plus Campaign and the scholarships for SVHS students.
“Polio is still a debilitating disease in four countries of the world,” said Heap. “It threatens to spread if not completely eradicated. Rotary began in 1985 by supplying vaccine to countries which would accept programs to vaccinate children. A child can be protected against Polio with $.60 worth of vaccine.”
The Rotary Club of Star Valley is attempting to raise $1,000 locally for the polio campaign. All money raised will receive matching grant monies from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
“Rotary is also busy in the community. As a club we hope to increase the amount of scholarship money we are able to offer to our graduating high school seniors, to further their education,” said Heap. “This is one of several pursuits Rotary supports to foster literacy in the community.”
According to Heap, getting involved in the chili cook-off would be a great way to celebrate the holiday season.
“As a community we hope you will come to support these worthwhile projects,” she said. “For employers, this would be an inexpensive way to recognize your employees with a fun lunchtime activity during the holidays.”
