Motorists asked to slow down near Etna school

Highway signage officially marking the new school zone in Etna is not up yet. However, school officials are asking motorists to be mindful that students are in the area.

School Zone“We are asking drivers to slow down as they pass Etna Elementary School on Highway 89,” said Superintendent Jon Abrams. “For us it is a safety issue for the students. We are asking drivers to please be aware and reduce their speed.”

Abrams said that the state highway department has ordered the school zone signs  that will be placed in front of the new school. A specific time frame for when those signs will be in place has not been given.
School zone signs reduce the speed limit to 20 miles per hour during school hours, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. That is the anticipated speed limit that will be posted in front of the Etna Elementary School, Abrams said.

The reduced speed signage that is currently in place toward the center of Etna where the old elementary school was, marks a crosswalk, Abrams said. That speed zone will likely remain in place even after new speed limit signage is placed along Highway 89 near the new Etna Elementary.

This should have been done when they were building the new school or at least by the end of summer 2008, but drivers should use some common sense. You don’t drive 65 in front of a school whether it’s posted or not.
