Friday Night Sports Wrap

The Braves knocked off Rock Springs on the hardwood and 23 wrestlers qualified for the 4A State tournament next week in Casper.

T.J. Guild has advanced to the regional finals as a freshmanAt the 4A West Regional wrestling tournament, the Braves currently sit in third place along with 23 individuals punching their ticket for the Oil City next weekend.  Green River holds a solid lead after day one with 189 team points.  Natrona County is second with 166.  The Braves have 126.5.  Rock Springs is a close fourth with Evanston and Kelly Walsh rounding out the field.

In addition, four Braves are in the finals for tomorrow’s championship bracket in Rock Springs.  Josh Claye at 103 pounds, Hayden Heap at 112 pounds, freshman T.J. Guild at 119 pounds and Mark Van Slyke at 135 pounds.

More information on the 4A West Regional will be written as the information is made available.

On the court, the Braves jumped out to a 9-0 lead to begin the game but the Tigers tied it up after a furious second quarter.  The Braves regained the lead and never relinquished it again as they claimed their tenth victory of the season, 65-57.  Junior Brandon Taylor led the team with 23 points while Jon Scherbel had 13.  David Cranford suffered a season-ending injury this week and Tyler Schwab was less than 100 percent after suffering an ankle sprain on Tuesday.

Jason Livingston scored eight points in the winThe Lady Braves were not as fortunate as they lost to the third ranked Lady Tigers, 64-23.  Randi Robinson and Dani Scherbel each had six to lead the gals in gold.

Both teams will join the wrestlers in Sweetwater County on Saturday as they face Green River.

And finally from the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho, three SVHS athletes have made their way to the finals.  Tyler Skinner in the High Jump, Madison Wilkes in the Shot Put and Kevin Brough in the 400 Meter Dash will all be participating in the finals heat on Saturday.
