The “X” chromosome ruled for SVHS over the weekend as the Lady Braves garnered a pair of wins on the soccer pitch and senior Madison Wilkes set a new school record in the Shot Put.
Members of the spring sports season began competition away from Star Valley over the weekend. On the soccer pitch, the Lady Braves and Riverton played to a scoreless 0-0 tie after one half, but the Lady Wolverines scored two quick goals just after intermission and coasted to a 2-0 victory in Riverton. The Lady Braves bounced back at the Cody Jamboree on Saturday and despite missing several players due to Prom festivities, defeated Pinedale 3-0 and held off Powell, 1-0. Worland stopped the streak by shutting out the Lady Braves 2-0, bringing their weekend record to 2-2. The Lady Braves host Kelly Walsh in a grudge match of sorts this Friday afternoon as well as Natrona on Saturday afternoon. Matches begin at 3 p.m. on Friday and the public is encouraged to attend this home opener between these two good teams on the new Braves Field. Cowbells, of course, are encouraged
- Things weren’t quite as successful for the Braves as they lost a hard-fought match with Newcastle 2-1 to begin the season. The next two games were against 3A powerhouses as Star Valley fell to Buffalo, 5-0 and Powell, 7-1 They will also play the two Casper schools but will be on the road to do so. The Braves’ home opener will take place April 9, against Evanston.
- Track & Field participated in Preston, Idaho over the weekend, we’ll be looking to fill you in on results of those athletes by Tuesday morning. The Dave Draney Invitational will take place on Braves Field on April 11. One athlete that the Independent has results for is Madison Wilkes who swept both the Shot Put and the Discus events in Preston. Her throw of 37′ 5″ sets a new outdoor school record, breaking the mark set by Danette Warren in 2007.
- The Mountain West didn’t fare well over the weekend in post-season basketball, just San Diego State in the NIT is still alive. The Aztecs defeated Kansas State in the second round and now await the winner of Davidson and St. Mary’s. Utah fell to Arizona who has now advanced to the Sweet 16, while BYU fell to Texas A&M for the second consecutive year in the opening round.
