For the last three times the Lady Trojans and Star Valley have played, 100 minutes just hasn’t been enough.
The Lady Braves continue to chip away at their conference rivals after earning a state tournament birth a year ago, this time playing Kelly Walsh to a 1-1 tie. It’s the first of a back-to-back home stand for the ladies with Natrona on tap for Friday afternoon.
KW’s Kayla Fakelman got her team on the scoreboard first, scoring midway through the first half after some indecision by the Star Valley defense. Fakelman took advantage and powered it past Star Valley keeper, Becca Sangster. The Trojans led 1-0 at the half. Sangster would have some great saves the remainder of the way and not allow another.
In the second half, the seemingly endless energy of players such as Klydi Brower, Kelsey Diedrich and Alisa Gimlin began to result in higher quality shots. One of which found the net in the 51st minute as Diedrich tied the game at 1-1.
For the remainder of the match, the two teams each saw incredibly close shaves come away with no score. Both teams also had some quality shots in the overtime periods but neither team was able to capitalize. Jocelyn Morris in particular had to stonewall at least five point blank attempts.
It’s the third consecutive time that the two programs have battled to a tie after 100 minutes. The difference is this time being a regular season game, the result is a stalemate. Kelley Walsh won by one the two previous times in a shootout format at regionals and state last season.
Both teams showed grit as temperatures were in the high 30′s for the beginning of the match, but had dipped to the lower 20′s by the time action concluded under some steady rain.
The tie moves the Lady Braves to 3-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the 4A West.
The junior varsity wasn’t so fortunate, falling behind 3-0 before scoring in the match’s final minute to avoid the shutout, 3-1. K.C. Schooner notched the goal.
As for the Braves, they battled the Trojans far away from home in the Oil City and did their best and battled the home team without a score for quite some time. However, once Kelly Walsh got rolling, they rang up the scoreboard with a 4-0 victory.
