The Star Valley Independent has not missed a weekly edition since February of 1901. Take a look back a some of the items that made the news this week 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago.
One hundred and eight will receive diplomas in graduation ceremonies tonight at the Star Valley High School Auditorium. The commencement will begin at 8 p.m. and will include talks and musical numbers by the graduates. Jolyn Call was named valedictorian and Christine Allred salutatorian at the annual Star Valley High School awards assembly held Wednesday. Other honor students named were Laurie Lisota and Dea Anderson with citizenship awards going to Casey Erickson and Jolyn Call.

50-years ago:
The newly improved Thayne Cemetery will be dedicated in a special ceremony on Memorial Day, Saturday, May 30, at 10 a.m., the cemetery committee has announced. The public is invited to the special program which is being arranged.
Poppy Day to be Observed Saturday–”To show that we remember . . . wear a poppy!’ This is the appeal being made to citizens in Star Valley by the American Legion Auxiliary, which will sponsor its annual Poppy Day, Saturday, May 23. On that day everyone will be asked to wear a poppy as a personal tribute to America’s war dead.
Impressive graduation exercises honored Star Valley High School graduates of the class of 1959, Thursday night of last week, when 82 seniors received diplomas from the board of education. The theme, “Tomorrow’s Horizons,” as depicted in the backdrop created especially for the occasion and in the program presented by the students.
New Speed Limit goes into effect in sate May 23–The code limits speeds to 20 mph in any business district, or when passing school grounds or school crossing, and 30 mph in residence or urban district. Sixty-five mph is the speed limit other places except for commercial vehicles. An exception is on 4-lane divided highways where the maximum is 70 for private cars. The law makes illegal driving on a highway at speed “greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions.”
75-years ago:
Today marks the close of one of the most successful high school years in the history of Star Valley. The largest class that has ever been graduated form the local school will receive their diplomas tonight. Very appropriate commencement exercised will be held, and a formal program has been arranged. The Seminary Graduation exercises were held last night.
The drought condition in the Valley is beginning to take a very serious aspect, and unless we get some rain in the near future a large part of the crops will be a failure. Many of the stream have not risen much and they are all getting smaller now. Irrigation water is very short. Fairview and the farms West of Afton are feeling it the worst, while Etna, and Freedom have the best outlook for a good hay crop. Salt River is the lowest it has been since the Valley was settled.
100-years ago:
Fairview news: A girl baby made its appearance in Mr. and Mrs. Milton Tolman’s home last Friday, May 14th. Miss Elva Child opened a tuition school Monday, May 10th. She is well patronized and is giving good satisfaction.
Auburn news: Mr. Erickson, brother to our Blacksmith here, has just arrived from Fort Bridger to help his brother in the shop. He is single and quite good looking, ‘so look out girls!’.
