Calamity Campground now open after slide

Idaho Falls, ID: Movement on the landslide near Calamity Campground (Snake River-Calamity Road #076) appears to have temporarily stabilized and the road conditions remains good for passenger cars, pick-up trucks and trailers. The Calamity Campground and boat launch are open.
Due to the size and complexity of the Calamity Landslide, the Forest Service had requested and received a review from the Federal Highway Administration as well as Forest Service specialists. Earlier plans for installation of electronic monitoring equipment at the site have been eliminated. The equipment considered does not provide an all encompassing coverage of the slide area and can be inconsistent in providing public warning depending on location of movement within the slide.
Recommendations from the Federal Highway Administration include requiring road users to stop before entering the slide area and visually verifying road condition from outside the slide area. Signs will be manufactured and installed before significant draw down of the reservoir occurs later this summer.
The Forest Service and Bonneville County will continue to provide monitoring and maintenance as conditions require.
