Independent Obituaries: July 2, 2009

The following are obituaries that appeared in the July 2, 2009 edition of the Star Valley Independent.

Harold BatemanHarold F Bateman, 78, of Bedford, died June 18, 2009, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center of complications from a tractor accident.  He was born May 25, 1931, in Afton, to Frank H. and Anna Barbara Neuenschwander Bateman.  He grew up on the family farm in Bedford.  Harold graduated from Star Valley High School, where for his senior year he was elected the senior class president.  He attended Brigham Young University and Ricks College.  Harold married his high school sweetheart, Eva LaRue Michaelson, on Sept. 27, 1951, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.    Harold joined the Air Force and served during the Korean War as an air traffic controller.  This is where he began his love of flying. Other interests included riding motor bikes and snow machines and taking pictures. But his highest priorities were his family and being of service.  When he returned from the military he worked on the family farm in Bedford, milking cows and raising beef cattle and sheep.  In later years, during the winter months, he was the alternate driver of the Senior Citizens Bus. More recently, he delivered Senior Citizens lunches during the Winter.    Harold worked at Star Valley Ranch RV Resort for 20 seasons, assisting with the care of one of their golf courses. He has also served on the Star Valley Hospital Board and on the Bedford Water Board.  Harold was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, including Bishop and Stake High Councilor.  He and Eva served a six-month Mission to Tennessee-Nashville and served as temple workers in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple for 22 years.  Harold is survived by his wife, Eva; his children, Harlan J. Bateman of Bedford; Hal Dean (Jenny Cox) Bateman of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Sheryl Ann (David) Hair of Millville, Utah; Therold M. (Stacie Sellers) Bateman of Rexburg, Idaho; and Sharan (Alan) Motzkus of Bedford; sisters, Mary Lou (Reid) Wilding of Sugar City, Idaho; and Lana Hepworth of Idaho Falls, Idaho; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.   Preceding him in death were his parents and grandchildren Anna Kay Bateman and Clay Bateman.  Funeral Services were held June 27 at the Bedford LDS Church. Internment was in the Bedford Cemetery.

James McDonnelJames Roland McDonnel III peacefully passed from this world into the loving arms of his Father and all who had gone before him on Monday June 22, 2009. James passed away due to complications of severe head trauma sustained in a fall brought on by his tragic and ongoing battle with depression and  alcoholism. Some of the strongest spirits have the biggest battles to fight during their sojourn in this life.  James was born in Pasadena, Calif., to James Roland McDonnel Jr. and Phyllis Mary Summers McDonnel on April 19, 1953; the third child of four. He frequently spoke of his wonderful childhood full of fond memories and fun days, especially at the beach.  In his teenage years he loved surfing, played the saxophone in his high school marching band, and became an Eagle Scout. James served an LDS mission to the Netherlands. He graduated from BYU and later the U of U with a degree in Pharmacy.   He had a love of the outdoors, hunting, fishing, hiking, and was an avid scouter. James loved helping others and was endlessly selfless with his time, energy, and talents. He also served in various church callings.  He married Jeannine Cockerill in the Salt Lake Temple on Dec. 17, 1976. He is survived by his wife; three children, J.R. (Marin);  Whitney; and Archie; his mother; and siblings, Carol (Roger) Manning; Margaret (Dean) Taylor; and Paul (Lori) McDonnel; and a new grandson, Collin. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.   Funeral services were  held Friday June 26, 2009.  In lieu of flowers please donate to The Boy Scouts of America, 525 S. Foothill Blvd, SLC, Utah 84113 in memory of James.

Eva and family, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of a very special Bishop and friend. When I come home to visit he is always there with a special hug. I will truly miss him. No one could ask for a better friend than Harold Bateman. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Libbie
