This Week in Star Valley: July 2-9

The Star Valley Independent has been producing a weekly newspaper for well over 100 years.  Take a look at what made the headlines 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago.

25-years ago:

Ad: Loretta’s Clip ‘n Snip, located at Grant’s place. Children’s Hair Cuts (7 and under) half price, reg $5.00 now $2.50.

Ad: Brides to be come in an see our largest selection of invitation, thank you napkins, bridal books accessories, at Afton Thrifty Print.

A slow pitch, double elimination softball tournament will be sponsored by the Smoot Recreation Park Committee at the Smoot ball diamond . . . there will be a $100 entry fee for the eight team tournament with a purse of $200 to the first place team and $150 to the second place team.

50-years ago:

Smoot news: It is reported that Low Gardner has purchased the Arthur Schwab ranch in Forest Dell. Arden (Budd) Lancaster has purchased the Henry Redford property.

Grover news: Mrs. Hilda Stitt is visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Anderson. They all motored to Logan and back last week, where they visited with Mr. and Mrs. Roice Anderson and family.

Auburn news: Mr. and Mrs. Les Hillyard have received word that their son, Elder Jim Hillyard, has been released from his mission and is in New Zealand, on his way to Hawaii, from where he will fly on home.

75-years ago:

Prisoners Captured after Exciting three day hunt–Prisoners got sheriff in cell room under ruse, attacked him with gun, aided by prisoner Joe Welch. He made desperate resistance, two escaped, taking sheriff’s car . . . Immediately Sheriff Oakley knocked the gun hand away and floored Morris. About that time the other three jumped on him and had laid him out, when Welch got up and came to his assistance. In the melee that followed Paul Morris and Raymond Shelton got out of the cell room and made for the back door, jumping into the sheriff’s new Buick and made their getaway . . . .

Commencing lst Monday the Valley mail has been transferred from Montpelier to Cokeville and in the future will come form Cokeville. The new contractor, Willard Cranney, made his first trip last Monday. He arrived in Afton with the mail about 2:00 p.m. on the first trip. The other new contractors, Russell Sessions and Ed Sessions started to haul the mail to Etna and Fairview, respectively.

100-years ago:

Fairview news: Mrs. Mary Dewey came in Tuesday on the mail to visit her daughters Mrs. C. F. Campbell and Mrs. O. R. Child. She has just spent three weeks with her son John in Emmett. She reports that place beautiful and thriving and says it is indeed a land of roses and strawberries this time of the year.

After spending a night in jail, Adelbert Welch was brought before Justice Wilde, on the charge of shooting within the town limits, and discharged with a good talking to.
