On Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, Vicky True was sentenced on four felony counts relating to the embezzling case at the Star Valley Senior Center. True was sentenced to serve not less than one year or more than four years in the Wyoming State Women’s Prison in Lusk.
True was also placed on supervised probation for a term of 24 years and ordered to pay restitution to the Star Valley Senior Center in the amount of $123,632.93.
According to County Attorney Eric Phillips, the criminal charges against True alleged that between the years 2004 to 2007, while employed as the project director of the Star Valley Senior Center, True embezzled large amounts of money from the Center.
“During the DCI investigation, True admitted to issuing herself double pay roll checks without authorization and to making and cashing checks on the Star Valley Senior Center bank account for personal use,” said Phillips. “The money taken was reportedly used for paying True’s personal monthly bills, living expenses, medical expenses, vehicle payments, travel, etc.”
According to Phillips, the embezzling case was a difficult one.
“There were a lot of financial records that had to be reviewed and a lot of interviews that took place,” said Phillips. “I know that the senior center suffered great financial hardship because of Ms. True’s actions. The fact that the senior center is still going strong is a testament of the durability and determination of the staff and senior citizens at the center. It is my hope that Ms. True’s conviction and incarceration will bring about some closure for the Star Valley Senior Center.”
