Independent Obituaries: September 24, 2009

The following are obituaries and death notices that appeared in the September 24, 2009 edition of the Star Valley Independent.

Ella ThompsonElla Hilda Liechty Thompson was born Aug. 23, 1917 in Providence, Utah and died Sept.12, 2009 in Afton at the age of 92. Her parents were John and Anna Lena Schneider Liechty.  Ella went to school in Providence and South Cache High School in Hyrum, Utah.  She came from quite a musical family. Her father played the accordion and her parents belonged to the Swiss-German Choir in Logan, Utah.  She and her sister Lillie would dress up in Swiss dress and sing all several types of programs in Swiss in Providence and surrounding communities.    She was married to Arthur Marion Wolfley and they later divorced.  Shirley and Reed were their children.    Ella married George Willis Thompson on July 19, 1951.  To this happy union a son was born, George, W. Thompson Jr. named after his father.  They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple Nov. 1, 1969.  George and Ella owned the Highway Market for several years and also helped operate the Alpine Hot-Springs Swimming pool which George and Ella co-owned with Tol and Donna Chapman.   Ella also cooked for the hunting camp that George and Tol operated together.   George and Ella would travel with their cutter team during the winter and to different parts of the country in the summer with George’s racehorses.   After they sold their hunting camp Ella cooked for the Ted Frome hunting camp.  After they sold the Highway Market, she worked in several cafes in Afton.  She made pies for Martha Brog at the Star Valley Swiss Cheese Co. in Thayne, was a cook for the Senior Citizens and a cook for the school for 20 years before retiring.  Ella was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints throughout her life. Some of her callings included being a singing mother, teacher in the M.I.A., Sunday School and Primary; a counselor and president of the M.I.A.; chorister for different organizations and being a Relief Society Visiting Teacher for 62 years.    She was honored at a Stake Conference and given a Relief Society Pin, she was also a Relief Society Supervisor and a Stake Missionary; a Den Mother for cub Scouts and a 4-H leader.  Ella was proceded in death by her husband, George Willis Thompson; her parents; brothers, John, Otto, Walter, Joseph, Elmer, Ernest, Edward and Oliver Liechty; sisters, Clara Luthy, Olga Hansen, and Lillie Jensen; one daughter-in-law and three grandchildren.  Ella is survived by her daughter Shirley (Ralph) Haderlie; sons Reed (Shirley) Wolfley; George (Beverly) Thompson; 20 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; and 47 great-great grandchildren.
