25-years ago:

The Postal Service is cooperating with the business community of Afton in urging customers to shop early and mail early for the holidays. Postmaster Carter asks holiday shoppers to mail early this year. . . . “Normally, we handle about 11,000 pieces of mail a day including cards, letters and packages, but during the holiday season, volume goes up to about 17,000 pieces.”

For Sale: Large Idaho spuds, $8 per hundred.

For Sale: House on beautiful secluded 25 acres, 7 miles North of Freedom. Three bedroom, 2 baths, dishwasher, fridge, all electric. Full basement, partially finished. Spring water, $135,000.

50-years ago:

(photo) Mrs. Vaughn Bassett shows what is left of her pressure cooker and kitchen range after the cooker blew up Monday night at the Bassett home in Osmond. The entire kitchen was devastated, but fortunately no one was hurt.

A very entertaining program entitled, “The Golden Road to Happiness” was presented Thursday evening at the high school auditorium by the Sixth Grade of the Afton Elementary School. A large crowd was in attendance. The program featured song and dance numbers depicting life in various countries throughout the world. Special costumes were made. All sixth graders participated. The program was under the direction of Principal Eldon Erickson, with text and music by Elona Hillyard; narration by Barbara Veigel; choreography by Lejette Johns and Gwen Dean; Costumes by Gwen Dean.

75-years ago:

Almanac: Nov. 19–Lincoln delivers famous Gettysburg address, 1863; 21–First practical phonograph shown by Edison, 1886.

Chas. Berg and sons have been busy the last few weeks building a new shoe repair shop. Mr. Berg states he is installing all new modern machinery and will soon be ready to do repair work. The building is between te Taysom Store and the Merritt Barber Shop.

Civil War Veteran dies at Fairview–Warren T. Whitten of Fairview passed away Wednesday evening at the home of his daughter Mrs. C.J. Bagley. He was an old Civil War veteran and the last one in the Valley to pass on.

100-years ago:

Ad: We will make special low prices on beef and mutton by the quarter at, Afton Meat Market.

New Telephone Directory–The October issue of the directory of the Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone Company is now being distributed to subscribers. The book contains the lists of subscribers in eastern and southern Idaho and in Star Valley, Wyoming, the list of long distance connections, and the usual general information and suggestions for telephone users.

Fairview news: After much tribulation our school is running full blast, with Wm. J. Jensen as principal and Leo Harrison in the primary grade. Mrs. Eliza Ann Tolman has returned from a visit to Swan Valley.
