The following are obituaries and death notices that appeared in the December 17, 2009 edition of the Star Valley Independent.
On Nov. 28, 2009, three days after celebrating her 72nd wedding anniversary with husband Arthur, Angie Sandner quietly left this earth to be with her Lord in heaven. Angie was born Dec 16, 1918 in Orville, Wash., but lived most of her life in the Salem, Ore., area. She and Arthur moved to Alpine in 2008 to live with their son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Linda Sandner. She thoroughly enjoyed that last year being with Jim and Linda and close to her grandchildren Justin and Teresa Sandner and great grandchildren, Keely, Logan and Haylen. She was delighted to renew friendships made during previous visits to Star Valley and make new friends. Angie spent 72 years being the “household engineer.” She was the bookkeeper for the family farm and sawmill businesses in Oregon. During the row crop years, she oversaw the strawberry fields during harvest. She thoroughly enjoyed being the local Avon lady for many years. She was devoted to her family and their care. Angie was a wonderful cook and entertainer in her home. She loved to set a beautiful table and entertain guests. She also was great at preparing for her family’s needs by canning or freezing whatever produce was in season. She always had a smile and in her attitude wanted others to see the joy of the Lord. She will be remembered for her storytelling as a Sunday School teacher with flannelgraphs and flash card stories. She wanted her children and others to grow up to know her Lord. Angie is survived by her loving husband, Arthur; daughter, Karen; son, Jim (Linda); son Dan; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and two brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one granddaughter. A memorial service for friends and family will be held Friday, Dec. 18, 2009 at 7 p.m. at Morning Star Baptist Church in Alpine.
Mary Mildred Williams Dockstader, 80, passed away Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 at a Pocatello care center with her daughter, Linda, by her side. She was born Jan. 31, 1929 in Shelley, Idaho to Sylverus (Pash) Williams and Laura Moore Williams. She attended school in Shelley and graduated from Shelley High School. Mary loved music. She sang, played the clarinet and piano in high school and throughout her life. After graduation she went to work in Idaho Falls for Idaho First National Bank. While walking each day to catch the bus to work she caught the eye of Keith C. Dockstader working at the local barbershop. They were married June 2, 1948 in the home of her parents in Shelley. Keith passed away on Nov. 20, 2008. Keith and Mary lived in Shelley for the next 48 years except for nine months spent in the Seattle area. Mary worked on and off through the years in the banking field. In between Keith and Mary had six children, losing the first, third and fifth boys due to premature births. They were blessed with three surviving children, two girls and a boy. Mary was an active member of the Community Methodist Church of Shelley all of her life until joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Shelley First Ward) in 1972. Keith and Mary sent two children on missions, one to Australia and one to South Africa. She was active in musical programs in both churches and in the community for much of her life. Mary moved to Clinton, Utah in 2004 living near her daughter Julie. She made many friends at Country Pines Independent Living during her time there. She moved to Quail Ridge in Pocatello in October of this year to live near her daughter Linda. They enjoyed trips for frozen yogurt and a nice Thanksgiving dinner. Mary is survived by three children, Linda (Dana) Christensen, Pocatello, Idaho; Daniel (Kim) Dockstader, Star Valley; and Julie (David) Heaps, Syracuse, Utah; eight grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one brother, D. Gene (Maxine) Williams, Frankenmuth, Mich. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith, three sons, Scott, Wynn, and Brian, one granddaughter, Reagan, and her parents, Pash and Laura. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Nalder Funeral Home in Shelley. Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the Shelley First Ward with viewing prior to services at the church from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Shelley Hillcrest Cemetery.
Wanda Hyer Burton, age 87, passed away in Glenwood, Utah, while living at the Curtis Assisted Living facility on Dec. 12, 2009. She was born in Logan, Utah, June 25, 1922, daughter of Ralph James Hyer and Arvilla Johnson. Her family moved to Star Valley, Wyoming in the fall of 1926. She graduated from Star Valley High School and attended Utah State University. She married her sweetheart, Claude Poulter Burton, on Nov. 26, 1941, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. In April of 1951, they moved to Salt Lake City and raised their family in the Cannon Stake. Her life was one of dedication to her family and church. She served faithfully in various positions in the church. She and her husband served in the San Jose California Mission from March 1983 to April 1984. She was also a member of the DUP. She had a great love of music, and enjoyed playing the piano. She loved reading, sewing, and camping with her family at Greys River. She enjoyed her family very much and there was always time for her children and grandchildren. Her giving heart and beautiful smile will be an everlasting legacy. She is survived by her six children, Ralph (Judy) of Island Park, Idaho; Pauline (Larry) Wilson of Manti, Utah; Annette (Dale) Harrison of Sandy, Utah; Jerald (Glenda) of Salt Lake City; Shannon (Niel) Parry of Woodland Hills, Utah; and Nancy (Errald) Curtis of Glenwood, Utah. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude, who died Nov. 24, 1996, and by two brothers, Harold and Grant Hyer. She has 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and one great, great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. in the Cannon LDS Stake Center, 934 West Fremont Avenue (1150 South). Friends may call at the McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, Friday, Dec. 18, from 6-8 p.m. and at the Cannon LDS Stake Center from 9 – 9:45 a.m., prior to the funeral services. Burial will take place in the Afton Cemetery.
Norma R Lindberg, 88, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away on Dec. 9, 2009 due to complications of a stroke. Funeral Services were held Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 at the Osmond Ward LDS Church. She is interred at the Afton Cemetery. Norma was born Dec. 31, 1920 to Leonard Robinson and Lila Irene Staley of Freedom. She attended grade school in Freedom and graduated from Star Valley High School in 1941. After school Norma worked in the LDS mission home in Salt Lake City. She was married to Merrill Taylor until 1946 when he was killed while working on a power line in the Mojave Desert. They had three children, Carolyn Darla, Jed R and Lila Irene. She married Wilton J. Lindberg of Osmond on March 27, 1957; he had two little girls, Jackie and Sherry. Together they had another girl, Laurie Sue and have spent the last 52 years happily living in Osmond on the family farm. Norma worked for Call Air Airplane factory as a bookkeeper for six years and for Caribou Four Corners Oil Co. and Maverick County Stores for 20 years prior to her retirement. What Norma enjoyed most was gardening. She had wonderful flower and vegetable gardens and shared their abundance with all. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting and cooking for family and friends. She loved to play games with the grandchildren and be of service to others. She is a member of the Osmond Latter-day Saints Ward and has fulfilled many callings within the ward. Norma was happiest when doing service for others. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers for 29 years and a volunteer at the Star Valley Hospital gift shop for several years. Norma had suffered several heart attacks and strokes in her later years and also macular degeneration had taken much of her sight. Regardless of these illnesses, Norma was always happy and enjoyed life. She is a true example of perseverance, dedication and generosity to all. Norma is survived by her husband Wilton; daughter Jackie (Wendell) Lowry; son Jed (Jan) Taylor; daughters Irene (Clark) Price; Sherry Lindberg and Laurie (Mike) Mignano. She has 21 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
Lambert T. Bewkes was born Aug. 13, 1916 and passed away on Nov. 25, 2009. He went peacefully with Billie by his side. Lambert joined the Navy in 1935 and served for 31 years. He met Billie in 1977. They came to Star Valley where they built two homes and had the foundation poured for the third when Lamberts emphysema kept him from the high elevation. Lambert enjoyed hydroponic vegetable gardening and building models of the homes he built. He leaves his wife of 31 years, Billie May, and two sons, Jeffery and Sandford Bewkes.
Memorial services for Max Schwab were held on Friday, Dec. 18, 2009 at noon in the Schwab Mortuary in Afton. Military honors will immediately follow after the service at the Afton Cemetery, conducted by the local American Legion and VFW Posts.
