The Star Valley Independent has been covering the area for more than 108 consecutive years.  Take a look back at what made the pages of the newspaper 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago!

25-years ago:

US 89 will receive high-volume snow removal attention . . . the high-volume designation means that the maintenance crews will work up to 20 hours per day to maintain high volume service. This also means that highway department crews will strive to provide a roadway surface free from drifts and snow ridges and to remove as much ice and snow pack as practical. The goal of high-volume service is to maintain a bare roadway suitable to driving safely at reasonable speed.

50-years ago:

Wyoming gets $210,859 from National Forest–The four inter-mountain states of Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming have received US. Treasury checks totaling nearly $1,700,000.

75-years ago:

Almanac: Dec. 17–Wright brothers make first airplane flight, 1903; 21–Pilgrims land at Plymouth Rock, Mass, 1620.

About a week ago the new Swiss cheese plant located at Paris, Idaho, opened for business. This plant is claimed to be the largest in this territory and is capable of handling 70,000 pounds of milk per day. The building is similar to the one at Osmond and will be managed b Paul Brog, who, according to the Paris Post, will move his family out there.

Last Saturday was the termination, locally of the Parco Gas and Oils or the “Independent Gas and Oil Co.” All of the local stations that have been handling Parco products, will handle Sinclair Gas and Oils. The Sinclair company purchased the Parco refinery several months ago, but the Parco name has been held until last Saturday. The big refinery at Parco, Wyoming, is now making gas and oils for the Sinclair Co.

100-years ago:

Ad: Attention! Attention! $4.00 in cash will be paid for coyote skins. $5.00 for beef hides. Highest price paid for all other hides and furs at Ed. Lewis’, Afton, Wyo.

Local items: Many very good loads of wood are passing thru the town now. Mr. Wm. W. Burton has moved to the south again, for the winter. Mr. Ollie Hartman and wife have gone to spend the holidays in Utah. Santa Claus is certainly busy now days, all the stores are doing a big business. Utah and Idaho have been having more severe weather than we have here in the Star Valleys.

Fairview news: Some of our boys ran up against a snag one day this week. They have been in the habit of joking quite freely in the past, but this time the joke didn’t seem to fit: the consequence was, one of the boys is carrying a beautifully decorated eye. (Meniholatum is the very best ingredient to remove discolorations. Ed.)
