Afton working towards improved school routes

The Town of Afton has been awarded a $15,000 Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) Grant from the Wyoming Department of Transportation. The funds are to be used to study student routes to the schools within the Town of Afton on the basis of student safety.  “The SRTS funding which you have been approved for requires no local match and is eligible for 100 percent reimbursement of eligible expenses,” said Sara Janes, Safe Routes to School Coordinator for the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
The Afton Town Council made the decision to move forward with the study during the September Council Meeting. The deadline to complete the safety study is by the end of 2011.

According to Town Administrator Randy Sanderson, once the study is finished, recommendations on how to improve the safety of students traveling to and from school within the Town of Afton will be presented to the council.

The town will review the study and recommendations and research the types of grant funding available for such projects, he said.

At that point, Sanderson continued, the town will decide whether or not to move forward with projects recommended by the Safe Routes to Schools study.
