Funeral Services for Dr. O.D. Perkes

Funeral services for Dr. O.D. Perkes will be held on Wednesday, April 4, at 11 a.m. in the Afton Stake Tabernacle.

A viewing will take place on Tuesday April 3, from 5-8 p.m. at the Afton Tabernacle and from 9-10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church.

Dr. Perkes practiced medicine in Star Valley for 55 years and was estimated to have seen approximately 800,000 patients in that time in addition to over 2,500 babies delivered, over 2,200 tonsillectomies and over 1,300 appendectomies.

Dr. Perkes has perhaps best been personified by a stretch from 1970-1977 where he was the only doctor in the area.

During this time there was a span of eight months where he went with little to no sleep.  Look for a feature of Dr. Perkes in the April 5, 2012 edition of the Star Valley Independent.

The viewing is going to be held at the Afton tabernacle. Not the mortuary. Please let everyone know.

I am truly saddened at the loss of Dr Perkes. He was a great influence on me as I came and practiced in Star Vally in the 70′s and 80′s. Dr Perkes was one of the few remaining truly general practitioners who served his patients and community with his heart and medical skills. My condolences to his family and the community he served.

When Doc Perkes and Anna Marie first moved to Afton, I was a teenager. I babysat for them and they were great friends to me. Dr. Perkes delivered my first child,Cary, 52 years ago this October. They were wonderful to me during a very trying time of my life and a great influence on me. I will never forget them. He was a wonderful doctor and friend. My love to their family.

What a multi-talented individual Star Valley has lost: physician, scholar, rancher, sportsman, musician, gospel instructor, community builder, and friend (be sure to read son Phillip’s article April 5th SV Independent). We (and the world) will never see another like him. Both our families hailed from Cache Valley, which led to many great duck hunts & fishing trips together from the time I was 13. He delivered all 5 of our living children, and was our home teacher for years. We miss him already. Our love to his family.

Dr Perkes delivered me and all of my brother and sisters. Through the years, he was also there for the passing of my father and sister. I have often wondered how someone as tough as Dr Perkes was could also be so tender hearted. What a great man and a great example.
