Alpine wrestling with sewer dilemma

The Town of Alpine will hold a special meeting on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 5 p.m. in the town hall. The purpose of the meeting is to work out a Memorandum of Understanding with Northstar Utility relating to sewer service.  “We are trying to come to an agreement and we need to have something done by the end of the month in order to apply for grant monies,” said Mayor Kennis Lutz. “On the 26th we are going to hash out the details of what needs to take place. It’s a work together process for everybody.”
In a special meeting in May, the Town of Alpine passed a resolution in favor of working with North Star Utility to connect the sewer system located “across the river to the town’s sewer system.”

The project calls for hanging a sewer line under the bridge, connecting both sides of the river to the same system.

The project will be made possible through a Federal Mineral Royalty Capital Construction Account Grant. If the town can secure grant funds for the project at 75 percent grant and 25 percent match requirement the project will move forward, Lutz said.

The 25 percent matching fund requirement will be met through the additional “tap fees and user fees” from the north side of the river in addition to “assessment fees” from that area, Lutz said.

In May the Town of Alpine also passed a resolution to restructure its sewer system loan payment schedule with the State Loan and Investment Board.

“With that restructuring it gives the town some time for growth and getting more people onto the system,” said Lutz.
