The Lady Braves collected a pair of wins and the Braves won once and lost twice during annual Jamboree play to begin the season.
The Braves ran away from Powell 8-2, before losing a pair of hard-fought contests to Lander 0-2 and Cody, 0-1.
The Lady Braves lost to Green River 1-2, before blowing past Worland 5-2 and crushing Newcastle 9-0.
The ladies played a trio of games in Cody with two, 25-minute halves, beginning play against the Wolves first. The Sweetwater County squad jumped out early, scoring both of their goals in the game’s first ten minutes before Star Valley’s Kenedey Brog cut the margin in half. The ladies were unable to get many scoring attempts against Green River as the total went final. Brog scored five goals last year as a freshman.
In game two, the Lady Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead en route to a 5-2 decision against Worland. Junior Jessica Woodford collected a hat trick against the Lady Warriors while senior Abby Nicoll scored her first of the season. Brog added another in the win.
Finally in game three, Woodford picked up where she left off, scoring the match’s first three goals for her fourth career hat trick. She eventually finished with a school-record five goals in the 9-0 victory. Nicoll collected her first career hat trick as well with three goals while Brog scored her third of the weekend. The nine goals is also a school best, eclipsing the eight goals against Rawlins last season.
Game one proved to the be the high point for the team at the Worland Jamboree as they took advantage of the two 40-minute halves to roll the Powell Panthers, 8-2. Dayne Abrams collected his first career varsity hat trick while Byron Anderson and Alvaro Castro scored two goals apiece. Salvador Gutierrez scored in the win as well.
Game two was more of a slugfest with Lander taking a 1-0 lead just before half and adding another goal just before the end of the match for a 2-0 Star Valley loss.
The final game came against Cody who held onto a 1-0 halftime lead to hand the Braves their second shutout of the weekend. Games against Lander and Cody utilized two 20-minute halves.
Both teams will host their first home match of the season on Tuesday, March 19, against Pinedale. The Lady Braves varsity match will begin at 3 p.m. with the varsity boys to follow at 5 p.m. It will be the only home match for Star Valley until May.
