Clarinex without prescription, Those of us who live in the footprint of the Utah sports media, playfully referred to as the Zion Curtain, have always heard the reoccurring notion that the BYU Cougars could consider the idea of becoming a football independent.

The costs associated with going unaffiliated always seemed too daunting and the scheduling of other sports would become almost impossible.  These concepts almost immediately shut down any further thought, real clarinex without prescription. Thoughtful article. However you should consider that Boise State got in to two BCS games simply by beating up on WAC opponents. Also, the “poor competition” in the WAC didn’t hurt the Broncos in those high-profile games. They won both BCS bowls which is more than can be said for any team except Utah.
As long as BYU wins, they will do well- no matter where they are.

A bitter article from another “woman scorned” (Wyoming). You need to dig deeper for the details and logic behind the move. Since its inception, BYU has been one of the cash cows for the MWC. In previous years, LDS leadership (many of whom are Utah alumni) would never let BYU go Independent or even join another conference without Utah. Now that Utah has flown the coop (and I don’t blame them at all for doing so), BYU is free to pursue options to increase their revenue and exposure. This is all about money and exposure. A contact with ESPN and KSL, and its own TV station, the financial risks are lower than you suggest. Add the money from a bowl game and maybe even a BCS bid every so often and it’s a no brainer. Your suggestion that this was an overreaction to Utah leaving is naive. Do you really think the ultra conservative BYU administration and LDS Church leadership would take a spur of the moment risk? You must not know much about the administration or the LDS Church. They would never approve this unless there is a solid and low risk financial reason. No, BYU doesn’t think it is Notre Dame, but there are financial rewards for going independent.

Has Utah really been as successful as you indicate? “Personally I see this as a gross overreaction to the fact that Utah has cashed in on half of dozen years of success” BYU is has won most of the games with U of U over the last few years. I have to wonder if Utah let it’s recent success in the BCS go to their head. I am not a U of U hater, but I wonder how well they will fair in the PAC 12 – finically probably better than in the MCW. The answer will take years to come. On the other hand BYU has something not many schools have to offer – their own TV station. I think the real loser here is the MWC. If they had shared revenues on a games won basis each year there would have been incentive for all schools to improve. Without BYU and U of U the MWC will fall apart. I don’t see Boise State as the savior of the MWC, and without BYU and U of U to compete against I think they will fair well with the MWC. Like it or not money talks, and fans only conjecture.

As a BYU football fan, I don’t think that it makes much sense for BYU to go independent. BYU still has a very strict honor code, and no amount of independent money is going to make their recruiting much better than it already is. Also, BYU’s other sports are going to suffer at the expense of the football program. WAC offers less money and less coverage.

    Dahl,
You have missed the whole point of going independent in your article. The reason for going independent will be the same reason Utah jumped to the Pac 10. It’s all for money. BYU and Utah have supported the entire Mountain West for the last ten years. BYU has its own broadcast abilities and a national following. They will make more revenue in one game negotiated with ESPN than they would make for an entire season playing in the Mountain West (1.5 million). It also makes sense because BYU will still be invited to a bowl game every year, and will get to keep the whole check instead of splitting it nine different ways. Playing four to six games a year against WAC teams won’t be any different than playing Wyoming, Colorado St, New Mexico, etc like they currently have to play in the MWC which currently hurts their strength of schedule. Now they have the ability to schedule six to eight games against BCS schools and ESPN will want in on that. They also have the choice to play thirteen games a year every other year. One more home game every other year translates to hundreds of thousands in revenue. Finally, the move also allows them to join another conference the same year they are invited. These are all better reasons than those for staying in the MWC. Plus, if the former Big 12 does end up dissolving within the next few years and schools such as Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa, and Missouri are looking for a new home; BYU will get TCU, Boise St, Houston, and Tulsa to join with them in the forming of a new league that will probably be able to negotiate a major television contract. I mean, this all makes sense for BYU. If the Big 12 doesn’t dissolve, they will invite BYU and Air Force or Boise State anyway. It all makes sense. And who are you kidding? You honestly don’t think current MWC schools would schedule BYU? They would in a heart beat. When BYU comes to town, MWC schools enjoy a sellout. Chances are that BYU wouldn’t want to schedule many games against current MWC schools because it would already have its schedule diluted a bit with the WAC schools. It already has four games scheduled against one of the two or three top MWC schools in Boise St. That series will help bolster BYU’s strength of schedule. Finally, your “sucker punch” that BYU hasn’t exactly beaten down the BCS doors is true. The same can be said about a lot of good football programs that currently belong to BCS conferences. If BYU gets BCS money, it will have earned it. It won’t come from just belonging to a conference. And obviously, BYU officials must not have much hope and faith that BCS officials will ever allow the MWC in. I mean, the writing is on the wall. Now we just have to wait and see if BYU really has the guts to go it alone. I am a BYU fan, and I would like the move.

Well It has all changed since this article. MWC has offered both Nevada and Fresno State. Both have accepted bids to the MWC. Now there is no one in the WAC worth playing for BYU. So what are they going to do?
