According to Afton Fire Chief, Rodd Hillyard, a fire intended for weeds and other dried material jumped from a lawn to a bush nearby which ignited and then caught onto the siding of the house and spread through the vent holes into the roof. Hillyard said that he believed that there was no structural damage and the fire path was limited to cosmetic repairs.
Approximately 25 firemen from the AFD responded to the call. Hillyard credited Johnson for containing much of the fire with a garden hose which was handy. Members of the AFD entered the roof area to extinguish burning insulation and other material.
