The Lady Braves basketball team will be well-known to most area fans because of the sheer number of varsity players who will be back in uniform again this season. The first day of practice on Monday brought out a total of 32 players vying for a spot in the program which features a slew of potential.
Lexi Erickson, Hailey Greenwood, Cortland Jenkins, Jessica Woodford, Shay Schwab, Jennifer Perry, Abby Nicoll and Shelbey Brog bring back a formidable group, one with an eye on improving upon their fourth place finish at the 3A state tournament last season. Erickson and Greenwood earned all-state honors last season as juniors. Greenwood led the team in scoring while Erickson led the team in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks from last year. Jenkins and Woodford appear poised to have a huge impact on the Lady Braves’ back court while toughness from Perry will help fill the gap on the guard line from the graduation of Christy Clinger. Schwab and Brog will likely be counted upon to play in the paint and replace Bailey Brog.
This returning group accounted for 29.7 points per game last year, approximately 58 percent of the overall offense and appear to be one of the early front runners in the 3A West for the 2012-13 campaign. Overall, a member of the list of returning players led the Lady Braves in scoring during at least one game, 21 times out of 28 games. The varsity will be aided by a junior varsity team that went 18-4 last year. The team’s first game is on November 29, in Montpelier, Idaho against the Bear Lake Bears at 7:30 p.m.
