Area law enforcement officials are asking Star Valley residents and those who may use valley banks to be wary. Texts are being sent to area phones with a statement that the user’s Bank of Star Valley (BOSV) credit card has been locked. Users are then directed to call what appears to be a local number including a (248) prefix, to reinstate their card. According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO)and the Town of Afton police department, this is a phishing scam trying to obtain sensitive information from the user. Law enforcement officers are asking those who have received the text to not call the number or give out any information.
Phishing is an attempt by a fraudulent party to pose as a trusted organization in an attempt to steal information.
Representatives from the Bank of Star Valley would like to remind their customers that they will never ask for personal identification via e-mail, text message or by telephone.. BOSV employees have also stated that customer information has not been compromised and the texting list appears to be specific to Verizon wireless users. If you have called the number and given out information, call the BOSV line at 307-264-5578 to cancel your card.
