With just one senior returning from last year’s Wyoming 3A state championship run, there is anxiety about a whole new group of players taking over the varsity ranks at Star Valley High School. That group did their best to calm those feelings with a convincing 45-29 victory on the road over the Bear Lake Bears on Thursday evening. Bronson Muir led the attack with 13 points while Rocky Hansen had 12 in the first half. Newcomer Cole Critchfield had ten points and led the team with seven rebounds. The Braves will be tested next weekend with rough conference road games in Cody and Powell.
Lady Braves: 29 Bears: 27
The defending champ Lady Braves also collected a win in Montpelier, Idaho over the weekend with a very scrappy and physical 29-27 win on the road. With a slew of sophomores and freshmen attempting to merge with just two seniors and two juniors, the ladies had just enough to extend the program’s winning streak from last year to 14 games. Shay Schwab led the way with nine points while freshman Savana Lucero had seven.
Ammon Guild claimed an event championship for the wrestlers on the opening weekend of the season at 195 pounds. It is the first varsity event title for the junior. Fellow juniors Jake Thompson and Austin Hoopes brought home third place finishes as did senior Paul Semadeni. As a team, the Braves finished seventh overall in Evanston.
