Search & Rescue to hold public avalanche training

The Star Valley Search and Rescue will hold an avalanche training session on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The training will take place from 7-9 p.m. at the Afton Civic Center.

“We will be talking about beacons and survival skills for if you are caught outdoors in the cold weather,” said Robert Roberts of Star Valley Search and Rescue. “We will talk about the basic essentials you should always carry with you.”

Information on “the proper way to probe for avalanche victims” will also be presented, Roberts said.

“We want to cover the tools you should always carry and how to use them if you need to,” he said. “There will also be a hands on part of the training. So we will be talking about the tools and then practicing with them.”

According to Roberts, in years passed, the Search and Rescue has held an extended training in the field following their basic avalanche training course.

“That extended training could be available again this year if there is enough interest,” he said.
There is no cost to attend the avalanche training course on Jan. 8.
