The Braves held off Worland for third place and couldn’t catch Douglas for second in what was an exciting race despite the winner already decided.

The Powell Panthers claimed their third consecutive state title with 244.5 team points. Douglas had 201.0 and the Braves finished with 178.0.

It was a season filled with challenges but was ultimately rewarding.

“There was a time where we were sitting at the Lander tournament with six varsity guys out of the lineup wondering if we would even be able to contend for a state trophy,” said head coach Eddie Clark. “Our guys have battled all season long and some of them have stepped up to the challenge and we had a good tournament.”

Junior Austin Hoopes claimed the school’s lone state championship at 170 pounds with a decision over Colter Haman of Douglas. Hoopes placed third last year at 145 pounds. Ammon Guild and Colton Trisler both finished second after advancing to the finals and earning all-state status. Guild, also a junior, will be back again next season.

Of the nine placers for SVHS at the tournament, six of them are expected to return next season. 14 of the 17 state qualifiers are also slated to wrestle next year.

Another Top-3 Finish: This year’s third place finish is Star Valley’s tenth top-three finish in the last eleven seasons.  That breakdown: Three state titles (‘04, ‘05 & ‘07), five runner-up finishes (‘05, 08, ‘10, ‘11 & ‘13), two third places (‘12 & ‘14) and one fifth place finish (‘09). (SVHS was in Wyoming’s 4A class in ‘08, ‘09, ‘10 & ‘11).
