As the school year draws to a close the spring sports wrap up a year of athletics as well.
Star Valley High School had teams in Casper for the 3A state track & field championships and also in Jackson for the 3A state soccer tournament.
On Day 1, the Braves track team had two state champions and the Lady Braves soccer team advanced to the semi-finals for the second consecutive year.
The Braves track team is in second place with 25 points.
Nic Demler had a good day. The junior collected his first state championship with a victory in the 3200 meter run and then combined with Cody Peck, Mitch Rider and Kellen Hansen as they Braves collected another state title in the 4 x 800 meter relay.
The Braves fell behind the favored Lander Tigers 1-0 late in the first half. The Tigers added another quick goal right out of the gate in the second half before Dayne Abrams answered to cut it to 2-1. Lander quickly added another goal and the final of 3-1 stuck. The boys team will now play Pinedale on Friday morning at 11 a.m. in the consolation bracket. This match will take place on Field #1 at the Jackson football field.
The favored Lady Braves unexpectedly fell behind the Cody Fillies 2-0 in the first eight minutes of their match before righting the ship. Dakota Bateman cut the deficit in half as she collected a rebound from a hard shot by Jessica Woodford. Today belonged to Kenedey Brog who scored the first of three goals on the day with a header up and over the keeper before a collision. After a 2-2 tie going into the half, Brog scored two more times in the early minutes of the second half for a 4-2 Star Valley lead before Bailey Sharpe put in the final score in the last ten minutes of the match. The Lady Braves now play Buffalo at 2 p.m. in the semi-finals on Friday. Their match will be on the civic fields near Jackson Hole High School.
