The Town of Thayne is considering adding prayer to its regular council meetings. Discussion of having an opening prayer in council meetings took place during the Thursday, June 12 meeting of the Thayne Town Council.
“The Supreme Court approved councils to open with a prayer and I propose that we do so,” said Councilman Jim Bartleson. “We could rotate the prayer responsibilities at council meeting each month among the various different religious leaders in Thayne throughout the year.”
According to Mayor Bob King, the Town of Thayne will “approach area clergy leaders to see if there is interest” at the local level to provide such a service.
“We will also check with the state laws to see if doing something like this is prohibited,” King said.
The town is also interested in hearing from the public on the topic of including prayer in regular council meetings, King said.
According to King, the Town of Thayne will spend the next several weeks gathering information and input on prayer in town council meetings. The discussion of whether or not to include an opening prayer as part of the Thayne Town Council meeting each month will continue in July.
