Star Valley fans are among the most ardent in Wyoming so it was no surprise that they turned out in good number for the fifth annual Red/White scrimmage on Braves Field last Thursday night.
With teams across the Cowboy State opting for different contests ranging from intra-squad scrimmages to bona fide games, Star Valley’s Red team put up four touchdowns in various ways on the White team for a 28-0 win, the fourth straight win for Reds.
In the first quarter, Jesse Sanders sprinted outside for a 58-yard touchdown run to give the Red a 7-0 lead. Later on, Reese Hiibel hit Chris Erickson perfectly in stride on a 41-yard bomb for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead. Sanders finished the night with 88 yards on just six carries.
Senior Andy Nield scored after snatching an interception from Darren Allred and running it in 20 yards for the score. The final touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Hiibel hit Kyler Battleson on a 40-yard touchdown, one of three catches on the night. Hiibel was picked off once on the night by junior Alex Howell. The White team was led in rushing by Kellen Hansen who had 23 yards.
• Ririe Bulldogs: 42
Braves JV: 45 OT
In a somewhat unusual scheduling result, the Braves junior varsity hosted the Ririe Bulldogs varsity on Friday night under the lights in what turned out to be one of the more exciting outings fans are likely to see this season.
After methodically building up a 35-14 lead mid-way through the fourth quarter, the Braves watched the Bulldogs score 28 straight points, including a defensive touchdown with 23 seconds left, to take a 42-35 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Kellen Hansen took it the distance to give the Braves a chance before scoring the two-point conversion as well to force overtime.
In the extra time, the Star Valley defense stymied the Bulldogs, turning them away on fourth down before taking over on offense. The team pushed near the goal line on second down only to see back-to-back penalties push them back to near the ten-yard line. Hyrum England knocked through the 28-yard field goal to win the game 45-42 in overtime.
• Preston in Town
The Braves varsity will host the Preston Indians on Friday night in the regular season opener with a kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
Star Valley High School has not played Preston High School since 1985, a 33-20 Braves win in Afton. The Indians, with a student population of over 700, now play in Idaho’s 4A classification and should present a stiff test for Star Valley right out of the gate.
The Indians lost on the road last weekend, 32-14, to the Park City Miners. Park City led 26-0 at halftime and rolled up over 350 yards rushing.
