A new source of iron ore discovered in the Cowboy State

Earlier this year the Wyoming State Legislature’s Mineral’s Committee called for a review of Wyoming’s iron resources. This past week, the Wyoming State Geological Survey reported to the committee that iron-rich rocks occur across Wyoming and recent exploration indicates at least one potentially large, and previously unknown deposit, in the Rattlesnake Hills-Granite Mountain area between Lander and Casper.

Traditional iron ore mining has occored in the Sunrise and South Pass areas of Wyoming. The geological survey advises that previous iron mining efforts have contributed to Wyoming’s economy, with the potential for the state to once again become an iron-producing state, given the right economic conditions.
