The Town of Afton has passed the first reading of an ordinance prohibiting the feeding of deer within town limits and town officials aknowledged a positive response from the community since the first reading.
The proposed ordinance states that no “owner or occupier of land within the Town of Afton shall intentionally feed, cause to be fed, or provide or make available food or other substances for the consumption by deer within the town.”
The ordinance states that feeding deer is illegal “on private property or on public property” within Afton. Under the proposed ordinance, anyone who feeds deer within the town is subject to a $100 fine on first offense and up to $750 in fines for any subsequent offenses. A second of the ordinance will be conducted in December.
