The Star Valley Search and Rescue (SVS&R) responded to reports of injured snowmobilers on Saturday afternoon February 27 at approximately 1 p.m.
Conflicting reports of where the incident had taken place hampered initial rescue efforts. According to initial reports, the riders had gone over a cliff or cornice.
One rider was able to use a satellite telephone to call for help.
According to family sources and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), McKay Erickson, 48, of Afton and Bailey Johnson, 18, of Auburn have sustained serious injuries.
The LCSO has had multiple accounts from riders during the process. Members of the local SVS&R have reached the scene at approximately 7:45 a.m. Sunday morning.
The Wyoming National Guard left Cheyenne at approximately 6 a.m. and will assist with the scene while the Teton County Search & Rescue is also en route to airlift a medic from the Afton area to the scene.
Due to the terrain the riders will have to be lifted out with ropes. Intermountain Health Care (IHC) is also on their way to aid the rescue.
*Update* (Sunday 10:09 a.m.)
According to Captain Brian Andrews of the LCSO, Johnson has been life-flighted to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah while Erickson was transported to Star Valley Medical Center in preparation to be flown to the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City.
Andrews stated that the rest of the party has been accounted for and are riding out via snowmobile.
