The Town of Afton is making preparations to host a summer beautification contest. The goal of the event is to create beauty around the town and get area businesses and residents involved without increases costs of upkeep and maintenance.
During the May meeting of the Afton Town Council, the council approved funds to purchase 100 planters, potting soil and flowers. Area businesses will be utilized in acquiring the necessary supplies. The planters will be placed throughout the town over the summer months. Watering and care of the flowers will be under the direction of businesses and residents, according to Town Administrator Hyun Kim. Then, at the end of the summer, judging will take place. Prizes and recognition will be given to the businesses and/or individuals with the “best” flowers.
According to Kim, having area businesses and residents involved in maintaining and watering the flowers helps to create a sense of community pride and interest in beautification. It also saves the town money by allowing employees to complete their workday without taking time and effort to water and weed plants. “We are going to give this program a try for the summer and see how it works out,” said Kim. “There has been a lot of interest expressed up to this point and many of the planters have been spoken for. There are still some available if that is something that you want to participate in. Just call the town and let us know.” For more information on the community planter program, contact the Afton Town Hall at 885-8696.
