The Star Valley boys 4 x 800 meter relay team (Wyatt Peck, Wesley Kallgren, Asefa Wetzel and Shane Henderson) not only garnered some attention as they won their event at the Simplot Games last weekend, but their time of 8:00.82 was good enough to qualify them for the New Balance Indoor Nationals held in New York, New York at The Armory Track & Field Center. The 2016 meet included 11 national records, 16 national class records and 35 meet records with more than 3,600 athletes from 43 states and four Canadian provinces competing.
The last Simplot Games event champion from Star Valley, former world-class high jumper Charlie Clinger, has organized a GoFundMe account to get the runners across the country. Clinger was an NCAA National Champion at Weber State and an alternate for the 2004 Olympics.
“I’ve competed in The Armory and won a silver medal there and it’s an amazing experience,” he said. “This is an extraordinary opportunity to have Star Valley represented at a prep national championship for, what we believe to be, the first time in history.”
The account is now open and accepting donations to help the team with every little bit pushing closer to their goal.
“We have created this fundraising account to provide our Star Valley community the opportunity to provide that support as a sign of appreciation for our team’s hard work and the honor they bring us with each outstanding performance,” Clinger added. “We encourage all to donate as much or as little as possible, knowing that any amount will be deeply appreciated and necessary.”
The SVHS Indoor Track & Field team will be competing in Gillette at the Wyoming Indoor Championships next weekend.
