An unlikely scenario to be sure, but nevertheless the Cowboy basketball team has played its way into the best two-out-of-three College Basketball Invitational Championship series. the unique format pairs Wyoming with Coastal Carolina, beginning Monday at Coastal, located in Conway, South Carolina. The institution is eight miles west of the oceanfront resort town of Myrtle Beach. Commonly referred to as CCU or Coastal, the school was founded in 1954 and became an independent university in 1993. the university is a national sea-grant institution and owns part of Waties Island, a 1,105-acre barrier island which serves as a natural laboratory. With and enrollment of 10,263, the Chanticleers are members of the Sun Belt Conference. The school became a household name last summer when its baseball team won the NCAA College World Series, the firs national title for the university.
Wyoming and CCU arrived at this championship series by each winning three games. The Cowboys defeated Eastern Washington, 9181, Missouri-Kansas City, 72-61 and Utah Valley, 74-68 all at home. Coastal defeated Hampton, 83-67, Loyola, Maryland, 72-63 and University of Illinois-Chicago, 89-78.
The championship series will mark the first time the two schools have ever met. To earn their way to the title series, the Cowboys had a battle with Utah Valley on Wednesday, March 23. they needed a baseline driving layup by senior wing, Jason McManamen with 43 seconds remaining to seal the win. Justin James, who fouled of the game, led the Cowboys with 16 points. McManamen and Louis Adams each added 12 points.
Following the opening game at Coastal, the championship series will resume in Laramie, next Wednesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium. If a third game is necessary, it will also be played in the Double-A on Friday, March 31. That game time has yet to be determined.
