Despite rain, snow and some sort of substance in-between, the distance crew from Star Valley High School thrived in the pair of events that were able to be run at the Wyoming State Track & Field Championships in Casper on Thursday.
The 200 meter preliminaries were scheduled but were moved to Friday due to conditions which means the day started with the 3200 meter run in all four Wyoming classifications.
The Lady Braves scored 15 team points in the event with Kayli Draney placing third, Emmy Heywood placing fourth and Martha Pieper placing fifth. Lacy Coles placed ninth in the race. Mountain View’s Hannah Behunin won the race with a time of 11:37.22.
The Braves displayed their distance dominance in the boys race with Asefa Wetzel, Shane Henderson and Wesley Kallgren placing first, second and third. Trevor Clark also scored as he placed seventh. With four of the top seven finishes Star Valley compiled 26 team points in the event. Wetzel’s time was 9:45.03.
The relay team of Kayli Draney, Mia Shumway, Emmy Heywood and Shay Erickson won the 4 x 800 meter relay with a time of 10:06.51 to claim the state championship in the event and ten more team points for the Lady Braves who are leading the team standings with 25 points.
There was little doubt about the Braves 4 x 800 team as they ran a 8:09.11 on the legs of Kallgren, Wetzel, Henderson and Wyatt Peck. They won the 3A race by 25 seconds and earned Best of the Best status with the fastest overall time of the day. The two events resulted in 36 team points for the Braves who have jumped out to a sizable lead in the team standings with most of the events remaining.
Field events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Friday morning. Star Valley will have competitors in the 3A girls long jump where she was the state runner-up last year as a sophomore and holds the SVHS school record of 17′ 9.5″.
Running events begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday with the 800 meter where SVHS is expected to do very well for both the boys and girls races. Henderson was the 800 state champ as a freshman and holds the SVHS school record of 1:55.19. and he along with teammates Wetzel and Peck have all logged times of under two minutes this season.
Draney, Heywood, Erickson & Shumway will be running the 800 for the Lady Braves. Draney was only .17 off of the SVHS school record at the 3A West Regionals in Rock Springs. Heywood and Erickson both run under 2:30 as well.
Things didn’t go as smoothly for the SVHS soccer teams as they began the state championships in Sheridan on Thursday.
The Braves got a goal from Mason Erickson to take the lead over the Cody Broncs 1-0 in the 51st minute. John Varian scored in the 57th and 58th minutes and the Braves were unable to recover as they fell to CHS, 2-1. Star Valley will now face the Douglas Bearcats at 11 a.m. on Friday morning. Douglas fell to Lander 7-0 in the opening round.
The Lady Braves gave up an early goal to Casey Wassum in the 8th minute in a 2-0 loss to Worland on Thursday afternoon. Wassum added a door-slammer in the 80th minute to send Star Valley into a consolation bracket match up with Rawlins which begins at 9 .m.
